retargeting
Retargeting is a digital marketing approach that targets users who have previously visited a website with banners ads on display networks across the web (Moz, 2011). The best example of this is when you like a post on your instagram page and it appears again on your feed. By delivering additional ads it increases engagement and, ultimately, drive conversions; Repetition is a key strategy. Placing a retargeting pixel on certain sections or the entire site, tracks users and helps you create an "audience". Both, click-through and view-through conversions are the main advertising measures.
Although, this marketing strategy might feel like our privacy is being monitored, tracked and making us feel stalked it's something that we have slowly come to understand. It's a more in-our-face advertisement that follows us everywhere simply because our social networks are connected and are constantly seen on a daily basis. The positive thing about this is that we are constantly presented with many options and through this we can find something superior to what we have tried in the past. The bad is that we have to choose how constantly we purchase something. Like everything, us as users, are in control of what to go for and as the marketer a great way to keep conversions up.
